In an effort to curb holiday season thefts, Los Angeles County Sheriff‘s deputies in Duarte took to shopping center parking lots this week, issuing “friendly reminders” to shoppers who left valuables in plain sight.
The Temple station confirmed that deputies distributed these notices, which urge shoppers to avoid becoming victims of crime by removing belongings like purses, cellphones, wallets, and even labeled packages from their vehicles. While resembling a ticket, the notice does not carry a fine.
“Your cooperation will help,” the Sheriff’s station stated. “Together we can reduce opportunities for crime to occur. Please remember to lock your vehicle and remove personal property.”
The Temple station clarified with NBC Los Angeles that this initiative was a “one-time” event, but deputies may repeat the effort later this month as holiday shopping intensifies.

Authorities strongly advise shoppers to always lock their vehicles, roll up windows, and secure personal belongings in the trunk. For those with car stereos, recording the serial number or engraving their driver’s license number on the device is recommended.
In addition to keeping valuables out of sight, shoppers shoudl avoid leaving garage door openers in their vehicles to prevent potential home burglaries. It’s also crucial to never store original ownership documents, such as car titles, inside the vehicle.
These proactive measures aim to ensure a safer holiday shopping experience for everyone.
