La Courneuve organizes its first referendum on 5G and the car in the city

From October 26 to 30, 2021, Courneuvians are called upon to respond to the themes of traffic, parking and also 5G.

A few weeks after a referendum in Kremlin-Bicêtre (Val-de-Marne) on the future location of the market, it is the turn of La Courneuve (Seine-Saint-Denis) to call on its citizens to express themselves on various matters of public order. Courneuvien takes place from Tuesday 26 to Saturday 30 October 2021.

Four questions are asked to the inhabitants. Three of them concern parking rules, traffic conditions and car speed: for or against “stricter parking regulations?”, “new traffic regulations in the immediate vicinity of schools?”, “the creation of a 30 zone throughout the city with the exception of the main avenues?”.

A final question will lead Courneuvians to decide on a technological question: for or against “the installation of 5G”.

“More direct democracy”

This referendum is a will of the municipal team of the commune. In a statement quoting the mayor (PCF) of La Courneuve Gilles Poux, the municipality said that “the aspiration for a more direct and more participatory democracy has become unavoidable in our society. This is why we want to give Courneuvians the opportunity to vote once a year on municipal decisions.“. All residents over the age of 16 – whatever their nationality – can vote. They must present proof of identity with a photo and proof of residence in La Courneuve.

To do this, they can go to different points in the city:

  • At the Mécano administrative center, or at the Maison de la citoyenne James-Marson in the city center
  • At the Maison pour tous Césaria-Evora, at 4000 Nord/Waldeck-Rochet
  • At the Jean-Houdremont cultural center, for the 4000 Sud
  • At the Maison pour tous Youri-Gagarine or at the Boutique de quartier, for the Quatre-Routes

Ahead of the vote, debates were organized every Tuesday in October. A final one takes place this Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. at the James Marson Citizenship House.

The announcement of the results will take place on Saturday, October 30 at the James-Marson Citizenship House and live on the town’s Facebook page. “The Municipal Council will then propose measures to be taken to implement the choices made by the inhabitants.“, explains the press release from the town hall. Debates were organized before the vote to inform and give their opinion. A final debate will take place this Tuesday, October 26, at the Maison de la Citoyenneté James Marson, at 6:30 p.m.
