La Costa Press – Municipality of La Costa

The Municipality of La Costa invites the community to participate in the 8th Racewalk for awareness and prevention, for the International Day to Fight Breast Cancer.

The call will take place on Saturday, October 12, at 10:30, in front of the Carabela de Santa Teresita located on Av. Costanera and 39th Street.

As every year, registration will take place on site, participation t-shirts will be handed out and, in addition, those who wish may bring a non-perishable food item that will then be delivered to a dining room.

The Oncologist at the Santa Teresita Hospital, Dr. Andrea Fernández (MN 99576 – MP 225914) said: “At the same time, we are going to have an art exhibition held by our patients and a Zumba class as a warm-up before the start.”

The Doctor thanked the members of the Secretariats of Health and Sports, the directors of the hospitals and the entire Oncology service, for the work carried out in the organization of this event..

Beyond this activity, Dr Fernández highlighted the importance of early detection of breast cancer. “This cancer is the most common in women, representing 32% of all tumors. Around 22,000 new cases are diagnosed per year and 1 in 8 women will develop cancer throughout our lives, but we have tools to detect it early,” he noted.

Given this, the doctor recommended “gynecological control starting at sexually active age. Perform mammograms and ultrasounds between 35 and 40 years of age, and then annually from the age of 50, to detect pre-invasive lesions, before they become carcinogenic. It is essential to have a healthy life, exercise for at least 30 minutes a day and control vitamin D levels. All this accompanied by annual clinical check-ups.”
