LA Clippers’ Russell Westbrook Fractures Hand, Out Indefinitely
The LA Clippers suffered a major blow in their recent victory against the Washington Wizards when former MVP Russell Westbrook fractured his left hand. The point guard’s injury could potentially keep him sidelined for several weeks, leaving the Clippers without one of their key players.
Coach Ty Lue expressed his sympathy for Westbrook, stating, “Just feel bad for Russ right now. You never want to see a player get hurt.” Lue also mentioned that they are still evaluating the injury and are unsure of the exact timetable for Westbrook’s return.
This is not the first time Westbrook has faced a hand injury. In the 2014-2015 season, he broke his right hand and had to undergo surgery. He missed 14 games before making his return to the court. Westbrook’s durability has been a notable aspect of his career, making this injury a rare occurrence.
Westbrook’s absence will undoubtedly be felt by the Clippers. His athleticism, energy, playmaking ability, and leadership are all valuable assets that the team will miss. James Harden, Westbrook’s teammate, acknowledged this, saying, “The Clippers will miss everything he brings to the game.”
While Westbrook is expected to be out for an extended period, the Clippers did receive some positive news with the return of Paul George. George had missed two games due to left knee soreness but made a successful comeback. He mentioned that his knee had been bothering him for a while and that the rest was much-needed.
In Westbrook’s absence, reserve point guard Bones Hyland could see an increased role. Hyland had not been a regular part of the rotation since early November but showcased his skills with seven assists in 16 minutes after Westbrook’s injury.
The Clippers will have to find a way to compensate for Westbrook’s energy and aggression on the court. Despite starting the season as the team’s point guard, Westbrook moved to the bench after the acquisition of Harden. This adjustment aimed to improve the flow of play between the team’s four stars, including Kawhi Leonard and George. Since the change, the Clippers have enjoyed a successful record of 35-13.
Westbrook’s absence will be felt not only in his on-court contributions but also in his vocal leadership. Coach Lue emphasized the importance of Westbrook’s presence, stating, “He’s going to stay engaged regardless. That’s just who he is. And so we need him around, we need his energy, we need him talking, the way he leads.”
The Clippers will undoubtedly miss Westbrook’s impact, but they remain hopeful for a speedy recovery. The exact timetable for his return is uncertain at this time, but the team is eager to have him back on the court as soon as possible.
