La Bocana beach and El Sunzal will become the epicenter of youth surfing for 10 days with the ISA World Junior Surfing Championship, a competition that will take place from May 3 to 12.
Details of the competition were provided by the Minister of Tourism, Morena Valdez, and the executive director of the International Surfing Association (ISA), Robert Fasulo.
Fasulo confirmed that the contest will bring together more than 447 athletes from 54 nations, a figure that surpasses the record of the 2022 edition, which was 45 countries.
For her part, Morena Valdez emphasized that the event not only promotes youth talent in surfing, but also positions El Salvador as a leading destination in high-level sports.
“El Salvador has now established itself as one of the main hosts of important surfing events worldwide, highlighted by the confidence of the ISA and the decision to return to our country with these World Championships,” said the official.
The ISA World Longboard Championship Surf City El Salvador 2024 is the 16th tournament held by the country since 2019, as part of the Surf City strategy and the seventh in coordination with the ISA.
“Believe it. We are in a country that has the best waves in the world, but also that has great quality in its hospitality and we have earned the opportunity to be organizers of more than 15 surf events with different organizations,” he stressed.
The El Salvador delegation will be made up of 10 athletes: Sophia Ramos, Fabiola Salmerón, Dorothy Moody, Julissa Moody, Miguel Navarro, Julio García, Héctor Flores, Deyfri Méndez, Melvin Ayala and Jason Steven Molina.
“I feel super proud to be able to represent El Salvador in this world event and I am super happy that all countries are here and can enjoy our wonderful waves. Welcome,” said Julisa Castillo, a Salvadoran surfer.
The competition will also have the participation of the Spanish Hans Odriozola, champion of the previous tournament.
“It is my second time in El Salvador and I am very happy to be with the best surfers of my age in the world and to be able to compete against them. People know El Salvador more because of the championships it organizes and it has very good waves, I love coming here. We are going to do our best, win sleeve by sleeve,” he commented.
The ISA World Junior Surfing Championships will be the 16th event hosted by the country and becomes a new opportunity to show the world the beauty and tourism potential of El Salvador, which will receive more than 660 visitors including athletes, delegates and family members.
It will also be the second tournament of the 2024 season after the ISA World Longboard Championship which was held from April 19 to 25.
