L.A. County has more than 1,000 coronavirus cases in a day

Los Angeles reported more than 1,000 new coronavirus cases in a single day on Friday, the most on record in months.

The last time the county recorded more than 1,000 new cases in a single day was due to a backlog of cases in late May. In early March, the city routinely posted new coronavirus cases out of more than 1,000 daily.

With 1,060 infections reported Friday, according to a preliminary count by the Times, the county averaged 598 new cases per day over the past week, a significant increase from a month ago when the city reported fewer than 200 infections a day.

However, the latest case rate is much lower than the peak of more than 15,000 infections a day at the height of the pandemic.

Authorities attribute the rise in coronavirus cases to the spread of the virus among unvaccinated people in the county.

The test positivity rate has risen, from the 1.5% reported last week, to Friday’s rate of 2.4%.

COVID-19 hospitalizations have also increased in the county. The historic low of hospitalizations for the coronavirus was recorded on June 12, when 212 patients were in the hospital, a decrease of 97% from the peak of the pandemic on January 5, when 8,098 people were admitted to hospitals.

But as of Thursday, there were 336 individuals with coronavirus in the city’s hospitals.

“With the increase in transmission of COVID-19 among unvaccinated people, [el Departamento de] Public Health encourages those who are eligible for coronavirus inoculation, and who have not yet received the antigen, to get vaccinated without delay, “county officials said in a statement.

“It takes time before it is considered to be fully inoculated. For all vaccines, you are only estimated to be fully protected two weeks after completing all doses. Immunization is the best protection against this disease ”.
