BISHKEK (Reuters) – Kyrgyz President Japarov and Tajikistan President Rahmon met Thursday in Uzbekistan, where the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit is held, to discuss a ceasefire and a military escalation on border clashes. The two former Soviet republics of Central Asia have long had border problems. Three people, including civilians, have so far been killed and dozens injured in the armed clashes that began this week. On Saturday, both sides accused each other of using tanks, mortars and other heavy weapons. The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement calling for immediate action to resolve the situation through political and diplomatic channels.
According to the Kyrgyz border guard, the ceasefire will take effect at 4:00 pm local time (7:00 pm Japan time). The Tajik authorities also confirmed that the ceasefire had been agreed.
