Some public figures made their mark during the opening of Fashion Week in Paris, but not necessarily for the right reasons. Yesterday, at the Schiapareilli parade, Kylie Jenner, Naomi Campbell and Irina Shayk released their most improbable outfit with huge animal heads as accessories. Two watchwords: ethics and discretion.
If you’re on social media, you couldn’t miss the red carpet shots of Kylie Jenner and Naomi Campbell. For once, other heads took center stage: those they wore on their chests, fake lion, wolf and snow leopard heads. The reactions were not long in coming, Internet users strongly criticized the use of such outfits, causing the Peta animal rights association to react last night.
No harmed animals for this look?
Peta took particular offense to Schiapareilli’s creative director Daniel Roseburry’s post on Instagram, saying “no animals were harmed in the making of this look.” Association’s response: “Although art can be subjective, this statement […] is objectively false. These heads were indeed created from animal raw materials: “silkworms were scalded alive and sheep were exploited for their fleeces”, laments Peta. A little mytho around the edges, Roseburry.
Shake up fashion codes
Supposed to embody Dante’s “circles of hell”, the leopard, lion and wolf represent lust, pride and greed respectively, according to Schiapareilli’s artistic director. Details that matter little to anyone with an environmental conscience and a love of biodiversity: this Fashion Week proves once again that it’s time to shake up fashion codes!
