The French newspaper Le Parisien and the ESPN sports network said last night that France’s first national football team captain, Kylian Mbappe, will join Spanish club Real Madrid when his current contract with his club, Paris Saint-Germain, the French champion, expires at the end of the current season.
Mbappe (25 years old) said last year that he would not renew his contract with the French capital club when it expires at the end of the 2023-2024 season, allowing him to move to another team for free.
Le Parisien and ESPN, citing sources, said that the French international striker will announce a preliminary agreement with the Spanish giant, the 14-time European champion, next week.
Media reports said last September that Mbappe agreed to waive the loyalty bonus to Paris Saint-Germain, which amounts to 100 million euros ($107.84 million), in exchange for allowing him to leave the club as a free player.
In 2022, many reports spoke of Mbappe’s imminent joining Real Madrid, but he announced the extension of his contract with Saint-Germain just weeks before the transfer window was scheduled to open.
