French players were insulted and racist in some cases by some fans on Saturday. When the black striker Kylian Mbappé was on the ball, monkey noises could be heard from the stands. This was reported by a dpa reporter from the stadium. Attacker Karim Benzema, who has Algerian roots, was also occasionally verbally abused.

Also hostile to Cristiano Ronaldo

After the first group game in Budapest, the Portuguese media reported that superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was hostile to some spectators in the Puskas Arena. More than 55,000 visitors, mostly Hungarian fans, attended the two games in the stadium.

In the previous two games of the Hungarians in Budapest (0: 3 against Portugal and 1: 1 against France) the notorious “Carpathian Brigade” appeared in the stadium. The black-clad mob is believed by experts to be a paramilitary group made up of neo-Nazis. According to eyewitness reports, the members of the brigade are said to have attracted attention through homophobic and racist remarks, and the Hitler salute was also shown.
