As expected, Texas Rangers manager Chris Woodward informed Kyle Gibson that he will be the pitcher to open the major league season on April 1 in Kansas City.
It will be the first opening day assignment of Gibson’s nine-year career.
It will be the third different opening day starter in three years under Woodward.
Last year’s opening day starter Lance Lynn was traded to the Chicago White Sox over the winter.
The Rangers haven’t had a pitcher opening back-to-back season starts since Kevin Millwood in 2008-09.
Gibson is 33 years old and has 136 innings pitched in the majors.
