Kyivstar Works to Restore Services After Hacker Attack

Two days after the hacker attack, phone calls can be made almost without interruption, but it will take a few more days to restore other services, Kyivstar, which has about 24.3 million customers, said.

“Region by region, we are carefully starting to restore mobile internet services,” said Kyivstar General Director Oleksandr Komarov, adding that the restoration process could last until the end of the week.

He said that fixed Internet access was restored to one million households. Several “Kyivstar” customers from Kyiv reported that they were only able to access the Internet for a short time today, but then the signal disappeared again.

“Restoring a telecommunications network after a large-scale hacker attack is a difficult process,” Kyivstar previously explained.

“We continue to cooperate with the Security Service of Ukraine and other state authorities to clarify all the details of the incident,” the company said.

Komarov said that the hackers most likely managed to penetrate Kyivstar’s security systems using the account of an employee of the company. He added that this employee may have “given away his password” to the hackers.

Since the beginning of Russia’s repeated invasion in February 2022, “Kyivstar” has repelled “approximately 500 more or less serious cyber attacks”, Komarov revealed.
