Hecht GGD Hollands Midden receives more than € 126,000 in funding from KWF for a two-year project for better sun protection. This allows residents of Katwijk and Noordwijk to be better protected against skin cancer. This form of cancer occurs above average in the Hollands Midden region, as shown by the Cancer Atlas presented in January. KWF is investing a total of €6 million in ten projects throughout the Netherlands. “Partly thanks to the Dutch Cancer Atlas, we know that skin cancer…
is more common in coastal municipalities, where there are more hours of sunshine and stronger sun power,” says Carla van Gils, director of KWF. “This also applies to the Hollands Midden region. Thanks to this financing, Hecht GGD Hollands Midden can now work even more intensively on targeted interventions. The aim is that fewer people in this region will develop skin cancer.”
Skin cancer is more common than average
“The figures in the recently published cancer atlas show that skin cancer occurs above average in the Hollands Midden region,” says GGD project leader Leanne Reijnen. “With project financing from KWF, we can start a two-year project to reduce skin cancer among residents in the Hollands Midden region.
Consider installing sunscreen dispensers and UV index poles at schools, childcare locations and beach bars, for example. But also creating awareness and promoting the use of sun protection products.”
Jacco Knape (alderman for the Economy Municipality of Katwijk): After a successful trial with two sunscreen poles in our municipality, it is good that we can make even more sunscreen available. In this way we can increase awareness about skin cancer and encourage the use of sunscreen.
Twelve GGDs at work
In addition to the Hecht GGD Hollands Midden project, KWF finances nine more projects, carried out by a total of twelve GGDs spread across the Netherlands. Four projects focus on quitting smoking and six on sun protection. The awarded projects are carried out by: GGD Hart voor Brabant, GGD West-Brabant, GGD Brabant-Zuidoost, GGD Flevoland, GGD Fryslân, GGD Hollands Midden, GGD Haaglanden, GGD Rotterdam-Rijnmond, GGD Zuid-Limburg and GGD Kennemerland together with GGD Hollands Noorden and GGD Zeeland.
GGD GHOR Netherlands, the trade association of GGDs, is pleased with the financing. André Rouvoet, chairman of GGD GHOR Netherlands: “We will work in places where people are most exposed to cancer risk factors. That is why ten projects are starting in twelve regions where lung or skin cancer is more common than in the rest of the Netherlands.
Prevention is essential here. Close to the people and goal-oriented. With the KWF project financing, GGDs can do more to prevent lung and skin cancer in their region, in addition to current projects such as Smoke-free environment and the Neighborhood Approach Smoke-free living for everyone. We are very happy with that.”
