Kwaku Summer Festival Faces Significant Drop in Attendance Due to Bad Weather

The Kwaku Summer Festival was visited by a lot less people this year due to the bad weather. That says organizer Ivette Forster in an interview with Southeast TV.

She speaks of a ‘totally rained out’ festival, with rain every weekend. “We calculated in the first weeks that there were about ten percent fewer visitors and I think that including this weekend we have reached the 30 percent fewer visitors.” Today, for example, there were probably a maximum of 12,000 visitors, while previously there were usually 30,000.

Kwaku takes place every year in the Nelson Mandela Park in Southeast and started in 1975 as a football tournament within the Surinamese community. There are now several stages and tents with music and a very large number of stalls with food.
