The Kuwaiti Ministry of Health announced, on Tuesday, the detection of the Corona (EG5) mutant, known as “Iris”, which is one of the sub-mutants of the Omicron mutant of the Corona virus, and it has been monitored so far in about 50 countries around the world.
The ministry stated in a press statement, carried by the official news agency, that there is no evidence that the new variant is more dangerous than other variants that were previously detected, but it was noted that it was rapidly spreading in some regions around the world, stressing at the same time the stability of the evaluation indicators of the health and clinical situation. in the country.
The Ministry indicated that the emergence of such mutants is expected and does not cause concern, as mutations are among the basic features of viruses, adding that it is necessary not to mix with others in the event of any symptoms or signs of respiratory infection appearing, and to complete seasonal vaccinations related to infectious respiratory diseases.
The World Health Organization announced the classification of “Iris” as a “strain of concern”, after hundreds of thousands of cases were recorded in several countries over the past few weeks.
Globally, more than 1 million new cases of the virus and more than 3,100 deaths have been reported in 28 days, according to the latest report from the global organization.
The new mutant belongs to the “XBB” strain descended from the “Omicron” mutant, which is still at the forefront of the world’s most common strains of coronavirus.
World Health confirms that available data does not indicate that the new strain poses a greater risk to public health than other strains currently circulating from Omicron.
Iris has his own variant known as EG.5.1, which is also rapidly spreading, according to viral health experts.
