Kuwait Ministry of Interior Foils Terrorist Cell Targeting Shiite Places of Worship

Kuwait News Agency reported that the Ministry of Interior foiled on Thursday a “terrorist” cell plan that targeted Shiite places of worship. The agency said: “Security men were able to follow the cell, monitor its movements, and arrest three members of an Arab nationality belonging to a terrorist organization,” without going into details. Kuwait witnessed the deadliest attack in decades in 2015, when a Saudi suicide bomber blew himself up inside a mosque crowded with Shiites, killing 27 people. The “Islamic State” organization claimed responsibility for the attack.

The ministry said in a statement published on the “X” platform: “The security services in the Ministry of Interior, represented by the State Security Service, were able to thwart a plan by a terrorist cell that intended to target places of worship belonging to the Shiite sect and kill people.”

She added: “Security men were able to follow the cell and monitor its movements, and arrested 3 members of an Arab nationality belonging to a terrorist organization.”

She explained, “All defendants were referred to the Public Prosecution to take legal measures against them.”

The Ministry did not reveal the nationality of the people, nor the name of the organization to which they belong.

In June 2015, a suicide attack targeted the Imam Al-Sadiq Mosque for Shiites in the Kuwaiti capital during Friday prayers, resulting in 27 deaths and 227 injuries, in an attack claimed by the “Islamic State” organization.

Months later, two Saudi brothers who had transported the explosives used in the bombing were arrested in their country, and their brother, who lives in Kuwait, was handed over to Saudi Arabia.

Shiites constitute about a third of Kuwaitis, who number approximately 1.5 million people.
