Kuwait City Announces Amnesty for Illegal Residents – March 17 to June 17

Kuwait City: An amnesty has been announced for illegal residents in Kuwait. The amnesty period will be from March 17 to June 17. A circular to this effect was issued by Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Minister of Interior Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousaf.

During the amnesty period, illegal residents can leave the country without penalty or punishment. Those who wish to remain in the country can have their residence permits validated by paying a fine. Those who use the amnesty facility will also have the opportunity to go home and come back. Officials have warned that those who remain in the country illegally after the amnesty period will face severe fines and punishments. Those caught in this way cannot return to Kuwait.

It is estimated that there are around one lakh illegal residents in Kuwait. Kuwait last announced a general amnesty in January 2018. Despite being given many opportunities including amnesty in the past, most of them did not take advantage of it.

Majority of the offenders are from Asian countries. Officials stated that a good percentage of them are domestic workers. Meanwhile, the authorities have clarified that those facing judicial proceedings should submit an application to the General Administration of Residence Affairs.
