In March 2021, Kurt Krömer revealed that he had been suffering from depression for around 30 years. The illness drove him into alcohol addiction. The comedian is now reporting publicly for the first time about what is probably his most frightening downfall.

For his educational work on depression, Kurt Krömer, 49, was awarded the “Mental Health Awareness Award” by the Robert Enke Foundation in Hanover on Saturday, August 24, 2024. The comedian has been publicly campaigning for three years to remove the taboo surrounding mental illness in our society and even wrote an entire book about his experiences entitled “You must not believe everything you think: My depression”. As he accepted the award, the TV star remembered one of his darkest hours.

Kurt Krömer woke up in a bloody hotel bed after a blackout

“I had the biggest crash of my life here in Hanover,” revealed Krömer, whose depression triggered an alcohol addiction, according to RTL. On the evening in question, he was driven back to the 5-star Hotel Luisenhof after an event, where he collapsed on the red carpet that was laid out in front of the entrance. Krömer described his condition as “completely drunk”. The Berliner still doesn’t know what happened after that.

The alcohol in his body caused such a severe blackout that Kurt Krömer could only see the images of the next morning – and he will probably never forget them. When the 49-year-old woke up in his hotel bed, he immediately panicked: “I pulled up the covers and everything was covered in blood.” He seriously asked himself whether he had possibly “stabbed someone”. Shortly afterwards it became clear that the blood on the sheets was his own. Kurt Krömer, whose real name is Alexander Bojcan, fell on the way to his hotel room the evening before.

After this traumatic experience, he avoided the city for two years. “I was scared and ashamed,” Krömer admitted during his speech in the Lower Saxony state capital. Ultimately, the father of four went to therapy and visited a clinic. After his stay, he felt much better: “I went out into the street and wanted to hug people.” However, that did not mean that the illness disappeared forever. To this day, the comedian, who takes medication for his illness, still experiences depressive days.

During one of his performances in Hanover, the 49-year-old returned to the hotel where he blacked out: “I got out for a moment, went to the Luisenhof, took a photo of this carpet and had it printed out.” The photo of the red carpet now hangs framed in his basement at home as a memorial and is intended to remind him again and again of how far he has come.
