After a weak start to the 2022 financial year, all business areas of the Kursaal Bern Group recorded substantial growth from the second quarter, which peaked in November with operating income of over CHF 4.3 million. Overall, the Kursaal Bern Group recorded a significant increase in sales of 61.9% to CHF 74.8 million in 2022. The operating result EBITDA rose to CHF 7.9 million and brought the company into the profit zone at this level (previous year: CHF – 2.5 million).

Nevertheless, at the end of the year there was a pro rata loss excluding minorities of CHF -2.5 million. Compared to the result of the previous year (CHF -13 million) adjusted for hardship benefits, it shows that 2022 could be closed significantly better, even if it was not overall succeeded in fully compensating for the losses of the first quarter.

“Last year we faced the challenges, some of which were unexpected, and will be presenting continuously better frequencies and sales from the second quarter of 2022. We will continue on this path with a focus on returning to profitable growth,” explains Chairman of the Board of Directors Prof. em. dr Daniel Buser.

With an equity ratio of 62.7% (previous year: 64.1%), the Kursaal Bern Group shows security and stability as in previous years. Group equity including minorities amounts to CHF 90.3 million.

The 2022 Annual Report of Kursaal Bern AG presents another focus of the company: sustainability. Since the beginning of the year, it has been offering CO2-neutral congresses and hotel accommodation with myclimate “Cause We Care”.

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

The consequences of the fourth corona wave were evident in all business areas in the first quarter of 2022: canceled or postponed events and canceled overnight stays. Numerous lockdowns in China affected supply chains. At the same time, the Ukraine war began to weigh on what was already a difficult economic environment. Significant price increases were the result.

In the second quarter, all business areas of the Kursaal Bern Group benefited from an upturn in consumption. This gratifying development continued throughout the rest of the year.

The company had to accept a high level of employee turnover, which is typical for the industry. However, she was once again able to fill all vacancies on her own. In 2022, the Kursaal Bern Group had 426 full-time equivalents (FTE) (2021: 357).
