František Kupka vytvořil ikonickou olejomalbu v době kolem roku 1930, kdy žil ve Francii a pracoval na abstraktním umění. Tato malba patří do období, kdy vytvářel obrazy strojů s ozubenými koly a kovovými disky, nazývané “mašinismy”.
Obraz s názvem Početí obsahuje zašifrovaný mytologický příběh o Danaé a bohu Zeusovi, který se snaží zplodit syna. Kupkova malba má vyjadřovat sílu stroje a spojení skrze tento starověký příběh.
Tento obraz byl vystaven několikrát, poprvé na pařížské výstavě v roce 1967 a později na dalších výstavách v Kolíně nad Rýnem a v Paříži.
