Kupang (ANTARA) – Deputy Mayor of Kupang Hermanus Man invites all residents, including volunteers, to make the implementation of polio immunization a success in 2022.
“We hope that the people of Kupang City will fully support the implementation of the polio vaccination which will soon be carried out in this area,” he said in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Saturday.
He said this was related to the planned implementation of polio immunization in Kupang City in 2022.
He said that in order to make the implementation of polio immunization successful in Kupang City, technical guidance on polio immunization and communication skills was carried out for village volunteers in the area.
The activity was organized by PMI Kupang City with the support of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Hermanus Man, who is also the Head of PMI Kupang City, hopes that the volunteers will play a role with PMI and the entire community of Kupang City against polio through polio immunization.
He said the volunteers could help socialize the program on polio management to the entire community at the kelurahan level.
He said the volunteers gained knowledge about polio vaccination, knowledge, and communication skills and attitudes as volunteers.
He said polio is caused by the polio virus. The virus enters through the mouth or nose and then spreads in the body through the bloodstream.
He said the spread of the polio virus can occur through direct contact with the feces of a polio patient or through the consumption of food and drink that has been contaminated with the polio virus.
Polio prevention can be done by immunization against polio. The polio vaccine is able to provide immunity against polio disease and is safe to give to people with weakened immune systems.
There are two forms of polio vaccine, namely injectable (IPV) and oral drops (OPV). Polio in the form of oral drops (OPV-0) is given to the baby shortly after birth. Furthermore, the polio vaccine will be given in four doses, either in the form of injections (IPV) or oral drops (OPV).
“All volunteers are to educate residents in their area so that children under the age of 15 must be vaccinated against polio,” he said.
