In cooperation with the Haus der Kunst, Munich, and the Muzeum Susch, the Kunstmuseum Bern is showing the largest retrospective on Heidi Bucher to date. The exhibition is dedicated to the Swiss artist’s diverse body of work and includes works from all creative phases and Werkgruppen.
In her work, the Swiss artist Heidi Bucher (1926-1993) celebrated the metamorphoses of life, detachment from the old and resurrection in a new skin. The largest retrospective to date, which can be seen at the Kunstmuseum Bern from April 8 to August 7, 2022, is dedicated to Bucher’s multifaceted oeuvre and shows works from all creative phases. These include early and largely unknown design studies from her student days, the genderless body sculptures known as “Bodyshells” from the experimental period in New York and Los Angeles in the 1960s and 1970s, during which she worked with Edward Kienholz, among others, as well as architectural and human latex “skins” from her main work.
A visionary ahead of her time
With her works, Bucher draws attention to the body in space, explores constraints and processes of liberation, and addresses painful memories, problematic spaces, and power structures in a socially critical manner. In the spirit of her totem animal, the dragonfly, Heidi Bucher’s changeability becomes self-empowerment, which testifies to belief in oneself – a world view that could not be more topical and therefore deserves its belated appreciation all the more.
