Munich / Berlin (MH) – The Munich Gasteig will be called “Gasteig HP8” at its interim location, and the new concert hall will be called the “Isarphilharmonie”. This is the result of a naming competition for the alternative quarter, announced the cultural center on Tuesday. “HP8” is borrowed from the address of the area at Hans-Preißinger-Straße 4-8.

1,893 people took part in the competition. 1,477 name suggestions were submitted for the site, seven of them “HP8”. For the concert hall of the Munich Philharmonic there were 1,347 ideas, 139 of which were named “Isarphilharmonie”. The association Isar Philharmonie München eV is ready to share the name with the new Philharmonie.
The Gasteig cultural center in Munich-Haidhausen, which opened in 1985, is being refurbished and will move temporarily to Stadtwerke München’s premises in the Sendling district from autumn 2021. In the next few years the area will be home to the Munich City Library, a main location of the Munich Adult Education Center, the Munich Philharmonic and part of the Munich University of Music and Theater. The renovation of the Gasteig should take until winter 2025. If the Munich Philharmonic can play there again, the interim concert hall will be sold.
