Kulon Progo Health Office Confirms No Cases of Japanese Encephalitis in Community

KULON PROGO, KOMPAS.com –Kulon Progo Health Service, Special Region of Yogyakarta, confirms that there are no cases of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in the community. No residents, especially children, suffer from this disease.

This confirmation was after all suspect samples were declared negative for JE or did not show infection with JE disease.

“All the suspects are negative, yes,” said the Head of the Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) Division of the Kulonprogo Health Office, Rina Nuryati, in a short statement, Tuesday (15/11/2023).

Negative samples through research by the Yogyakarta Center for Environmental Health and Disease Control Engineering (BBTKL).

The Kulon Progo Health Office previously sent five samples of suspected JE to the BBTKL laboratory. The five samples came from four suspected cases admitted to health service facilities (fasyankes) and one case that died. They are children’s age.

Four suspects first emerged with negative results, Tuesday (14/11/2023). One suspect later tested negative for JE disease, today.

Rina emphasized that the results confirmed that Kulon Progo had no JE cases as in previous years.

“Until now there is no JE (in Kulon Progo),” said Rina via message.

The government continues to ensure there are zero cases of JE in DIY, as no similar cases have been found in the last three years. Therefore, surveillance continues to be carried out in several city districts in DIY, including Kulon Progo. Surveillance aims to ensure that there is no further spread of this virus in the community.

In the 2023 surveillance effort, five suspects were found in Kulon Progo. The suspect samples were tested by the laboratory with all results negative.

“JE cases in DIY have actually been zero in the past three years. However, this must be proven through surveillance. Every year we record any suspects, then samples are sent. “Hopefully this time the results will be negative,” said Doctor Rina on a previous occasion.

JE disease originates from animals (zoonosis) and is spread through intermediary animals, including mosquitoes which are usually found around houses, rice fields, ponds or ditches. The virus reservoirs are cows, buffalo, monkeys and several species of birds.

JE disease is caused by the JE virus. This disease is usually found in children under 15 years of age.

JE disease is easy to prevent by implementing clean and healthy living behavior patterns (PHBS). Clean and healthy behavior prevents people from disease.

Those who are infected will experience a number of symptoms, such as high fever in the early days to seizures if not treated immediately. This disease is considered very dangerous because of its damage to the brain. Late treatment can result in death.
