Remembering and bringing to life Imants Ziedonis’ timeless work “Kurzemīte” today, a cultural potato field was established in Kuldīga last year. This year the field was designed as a tablecloth – in a drill pattern. The harvest on September 12 turned out to be a real celebration, during which the art installation “An even bigger table above my table” was unveiled. It will be not only an object of environmental art, but also a library, a place for picnics and cultural events.
“It simply came to our notice then. This is one simple table that stands and wants to be ruled at the end of the table. Of course, I know that there is a sky like a much bigger table above my desk, “- these lines from Imants Ziedonis’ collection of poems” Butterfly Attack “have prompted the Ziedonis Museum to illustrate it and create a new cultural place near the cultural potato field in Kuldiga. methods, but its visual image reflects the poet ‘s own values - Latvianness is embedded in oak and monumentality.
“The table is an allegory of Imants himself – the pillar shines, Imants Ziedonis has talked a lot about the vertical, now he is connected with it,” says Velga Vītola, the artist of the creative association “Vītola magvis”.
In the spring, the adjacent field of cultivated potatoes, using two varieties, acquired a dragon pattern and symbolically became a tablecloth. The tablecloth applied at the opening of the environmental art object was removed from the table, thus allowing everyone to come here with their tablecloth, enjoy being together and talking.
“This is only such a small stage, because we are approaching the 90th anniversary of Imants Ziedonis, which will be in 2023, the year will be full of all kinds of events.
As in the real potato harvest festival, the freshly harvested potatoes could be tasted after the clean-up, the taste buds were pampered by the potato ice cream prepared there. The children and their parents took part in the potato creative workshops and tried their luck in the “Ziedonis class” break-out games. The potato field in Kuldīga confirms Imants Ziedonis’ untimely literary work “Kurzemīte”, which begins in a house near Kuldīga in a potato cleanup. Traveling around Kurzeme, Imants Ziedonis met many people who do, because they can’t help but do. This summer has encouraged us to meet the peers of such people today. What has come of it all? This will be announced both by the new “Radio Magazine” created by the “Kartupeļu Lauka Radio” team and by the exhibition “Where is the Land So”, which will be opened at the beginning of October at the Kuldīga Regional Museum.
