Kudret Kanoglu’s Career Highlights and Return to VfB Bottrop

Kudret Kanoglu, captain of the district league team VfB Bottrop, answers the RS questionnaire and, among other things, looks back on the highlights of his career.

VfB Bottrop and Kudret Kanoglu have come together again. After a detour to SC Reken for a year, the prodigal son returned to the Jahnstadion in the summer of 2023.

The 30-year-old is captain of VfB and an absolute leader. The strong start to the season with five wins and one defeat, which resulted from the recent derby against Fortuna Bottrop, is also a credit to the former Turkish legionnaire.

Before Bottrop’s captain Kanoglu continues next weekend in the district league against SuS 21 Oberhausen, he answers the RevierSport catalog of questions.

My biggest strength is… my left foot.

My biggest weakness is… heading the ball.

In our cabin… there is always a good atmosphere.

The best moment of my football career was… a cup game with Manisaspor against Trabzonspor at the end of 2016. There were 40,000 spectators in Trabzon and we played against players like Oscar Cardozo, who was once a star at Benfica Lisbon, or Mehmet Ekici, who you might still remember who Bayern knows, played. That was an incredible experience for me. I was allowed to stand on the grass for around 65 minutes. Unfortunately, we clearly lost the game. I can’t remember the result (laughs).

The best goal of my career was… also in a game with Manisaspor against Denizlispor. That was in the 2015/2016 season. A long ball came, I turned towards the player and immediately shot – from 20 meters into the corner.

I didn’t become a professional footballer because… I was too naive. I was too kind, if you want to be a professional in this business for a long time, you can’t show any feelings. Players who are naive get burned out, depressed and fail. I was in this business for five years, then I returned from Turkey to amateur football in Germany. With today’s knowledge I would do a few things differently and simply be more ripped off. But then that wouldn’t be me. I don’t know if I would be happy with that.

The best thing about the Ruhr area is… Bottrop.

Either … or?

Dortmund or Schalke? Red and white food.

Beer or water? Water.

Club or pub? Actually neither, but if I do then I’ll go to the club.

Natural or artificial turf? Natural grass! Artificial turf is the biggest piece of crap ever invented in football. The risk of injury is much higher than on the old clay pitches where we grew up.

Fighter or artist? I’m actually the artist. But: I would also like to say that I also have a big fighter’s heart.

Football on TV or stadium? If I have the time, then of course in the stadium, like recently in Bruges when I was there with my brother Samet at a Besiktas game. You just see the game completely differently, you can absorb the atmosphere much better.

Finally, a few questions:

Who would you like to have a beer with? I do not drink beer. So I would like to have a coffee with Ricardo Quaresma. For me he was a better footballer than Cristiano Ronaldo, but unfortunately he doesn’t have the bite like CR7.

What can you laugh about?

I’m a person who can laugh about a lot of things and is fun for everyone – as long as it doesn’t hurt or disadvantage other people.

What is essential for you?

My family! And of course there is football somewhere.

What music do you like to listen to and what’s playing in the cabin?

Everything is actually going well in our cabin. German rap R’ n’ B. I’m not a particular music type and actually like to listen to the radio in my private life to stay up to date.

If you could start over, what would you do differently in your life?

I’m happy with my life and wouldn’t actually do anything differently. And in terms of football, as already mentioned, I would probably adapt to the business a bit in order to be able to stay in this business for a long time.
