Researchers at the Australian National University said that an important protein can be activated to prevent colon cancer, according to what the American newspaper “New York Post” reported.
Researcher Abhimanu Pandey said about the Ku70 protein: “In its active state, this protein acts as a surveillance system, detecting signs of DNA damage in our cells.”
He added that “damaged DNA” is usually an early warning sign that cells could become cancerous, highlighting that “Ku70 has the ability to reverse or at least stop the damage.”
He continued: “Our research shows that Ku70 can cool down cancer cells and get rid of damaged DNA. This protein prevents cancer cells from becoming more aggressive and spreading throughout the body, essentially disabling them.”
Colorectal cancer is one of the most common types of cancer after breast cancer and lung cancer.
In the United States, more than 126,000 cases of colon cancer were reported in 2020. It claimed the lives of about 52,000 people that year.
However, 90 percent of cases can be treated successfully if detected early, according to data published in the journal Science Advances.
Researcher Si Ming Man Man said: “We know that early detection and treatment are vital to defeat not only bowel cancer, but other types of cancer as well.”
He added that screening for cancers such as colon cancer may soon include checking Ku70 levels.
“Our research shows that Ku70 is a good immune biomarker, which means it may help us predict the possibility of developing colon cancer,” he explained.
