KS: Three of Trifonov’s referendum questions are unconstitutional – 2024-09-29 09:26:26

/ world today news/ With 12 votes, the Constitutional Court decided today the case initiated at the request of President Plevneliev concerning the referendum of Slavi Trifonov. Thus, the Constitutional Court suspended three of the six questions of a national referendum, initiated by the TV presenter and supported by nearly 700,000 Bulgarian citizens, reports a BGNES reporter.

The Constitutional Court established the unconstitutionality of the Decision of the National Assembly to hold a national referendum, adopted on May 12, in the part concerning questions numbered 2, 4 and 6.

The three issues are: to be able to vote remotely electronically when conducting elections and referenda, to reduce the number of people’s representatives to 120 and the directors of the regional directorates of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the heads of regional departments in the regional directorates of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to be elected by a majoritarian electoral system with an absolute majority in two rounds.

Already on May 27, President Rosen Plevneliev submitted a request to the Constitutional Court to rule on compliance with the constitution regarding the parliament’s decision to hold a national referendum regarding three of the issues.

At the beginning of the year, an initiative committee of the “Slavi Show” submitted a petition with nearly 700,000 signatures for a referendum. According to the law on referendums, the poll must be held together with the presidential election at the end of October this year.

All 6 questions of the survey are: “1. Do you support people’s representatives being elected with a majoritarian electoral system with an absolute majority in two rounds? 2. Do you support reducing the number of people’s representatives to 120? 3. Do you support the introduction of compulsory voting in elections and referenda? 4. Do you support being able to vote remotely electronically when conducting elections and referenda? 5. Do you support the annual state subsidy granted to finance political parties and coalitions to be one lev for one actual vote received in the last parliamentary elections? 6. Do you support the directors of the regional directorates of the Ministry of the Interior and the heads of regional departments in the regional directorates of the Ministry of the Interior to be elected with a majoritarian electoral system with an absolute majority in two rounds?”.
