KS Chitra was born on July 27, 1963 in Karamana, Thiruvananthapuram, the daughter of Karamana Krishnan Nair and Shanthakumari. Father was the first Guru. Chitra, who studied Carnatic music under the teacher K Omanakutty, was taken to film music by MG Radhakrishnan. KS Bina and KS Mahesh are brothers.
Chitra’s musical career spans four decades, having sung more than twenty thousand songs for films and about seven thousand songs in different languages such as Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Bengali, Assamese, Telugu, Kannada, Oriya and Tulu. There are few Malayalis who don’t have at least one song from the film in their favorite melodies. Chitra is Malayalam’s own vanambadi for Kerala.
