Krystyna Konarska: A Tale of Musical Success, International Performances, and Personal Journey

Krystyna Konarska was born on March 8, 1941 in Berlin, but her later life was connected with Poland. She lived in Więszyce, a village near Kędzierzyn-Koźle.

She became seriously interested in singing after winning a local music competition organized by a community center. Then she delighted in another competition – this time organized by Radio Opole. There, a person from the music industry became interested in her and invited her to Warsaw.

The next years for Konarska were a series of successes on the Polish stage. She performed all over the country alongside the biggest stars, she also gave concerts in East Germany, the USSR and Yugoslavia. She performed successfully at the Festival in Opole (in 1964 she was awarded for “Song from the suburbs” and “Spalona Ziemi”) and the Festival in Sopot.

She also performed with the band Tajfuny, she was also known for such hits as: “And yet to couple”, “I’m afraid of your love”, “Has anyone told you”, “Why don’t you love me”, “Valleys in flowers” or “Autumn Lord”.

You could also see her in film productions, e.g. Penguin (1964) and Holy War (1965). In 1967 she went on a scholarship to Paris. There, she was noticed by Eddie Barclay, who claimed that he would help make her a great career. This dream, however, did not come true, as the producer’s and entrepreneur’s label went bankrupt.

In the following years, Konarska wandered around the world, performing in clubs, e.g. in: Greece, Morocco, Japan and Portugal. In Paris, where she lived between concerts, she met a Polish highlander with whom she fell in love.

The singer decided to give up her career, marry a new partner and move to Alaska. At the “end of the world” she helped disabled children. When her marriage broke up, she returned to Germany, where she lived until her death. She visited Poland sporadically.
