Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos tested positive for COVID-19 less than a week after the team’s last game in the Spanish League, the club reported on Monday.
The German player is expected to miss the decisive match against Villarreal on Sunday. Madrid need to win it to keep alive the hopes of revalidating their league title. The meringues are two points behind Atlético de Madrid before the last day.
Kroos was absent on Sunday in the match against Athletic Bilbao, which they won 1-0 to stay in the race. Kroos was ruled out after being isolated for having been in close contact with a person who had tested positive for coronavirus.
Madrid indicated that the player has been in isolation since Friday.
