Now, however, Kristin can tell Dagbladet that she was affected by bowel cancer at Easter. This is a diagnosis she wants to spread more knowledge about.
– Many people discover it too late, because there are very few signs before the tumor has managed to become quite large, she admits.
Cancer
The 63-year-old can tell that she discovered discomfort in her stomach, but that she did not think much about it until it became prolonged.
– I discovered it by having air in my stomach and some blood in the stool. After it had been going on for four or five days, I thought it was a little strange, because I do not usually have it.
When she called the hospital clinic Volvat, the nurse suspected that it could be hemorrhoids or a small crack. It should still turn out to be something far worse.
–
– When I came home after Easter, I noticed that I still did not feel better. Then I ordered an intestinal check with a camera.
Here she was further referred to an intestinal specialist, who performed a biopsy, in which a piece of tissue is removed from the organ to be examined. This was forwarded to Unilabs.
The doctor could still confirm the crucial message:
“I can only say at once that this is cancer, it is malignant and this is not the time for you. Here we must move on ».
– You get a little shock, but I like to know what I have to relate to. I had a great feeling that he was open and ready for it, Andresen says about the shock message.
Went to the US
Exposed bowel is among the operations that many have to perform in bowel cancer. This means that the intestine has an artificial opening so that it can be emptied through the skin. Andresen would try to avoid this.
The 63-year-old had a desire to find out if there were alternatives to the very extensive operation, and thus turned his nose towards the United States to look at other treatments.
Together with her husband, the couple read carefully, and eventually found a clinic called Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
They therefore sent the test samples to the laboratory at the American hospital, which should prove to give several new results.
– The laboratory at Sloan Kettering had had a completely different result on the biopsy – a different type of bowel cancer than what Unilabs had found in advance.
– Burns in the buttocks
Andresen emphasizes that she received the necessary help at Ullevål hospital here at home, but eventually chose to carry out the cancer treatment in New York.
During the month in which the property developer was under investigation, before she was in place in the US, the tumor had doubled, according to Andresen. The next time was tough.
– In the US, I ended up with chemotherapy in the morning, radiation for lunch and chemotherapy in the evening. In addition to two megadoses with what I called “rat poison”.
Andresen endured the strong treatment, and did not lose any of his hair along the way. She should, however, feel another side effect.
–
– The radiation causes open burns in the buttocks. So you can hardly sit and go to the toilet. It is absolutely cruel, she says, and adds:
– It only got worse and worse, and the last two weeks were completely python. This is clearly the worst part of the treatment.
Today, the 63-year-old is back in Norway, and on the road to recovery.
– Extremely uncomfortable
Last autumn, by the way, daughter Katharina Andresen could tell about cell changes that had been discovered in her cervix, and about the subsequent operation she had to have.
– It turned out after the first test, ie scraping of the cervix, that it looked like big changes. There were some small tears then, not because I was afraid of cancer, but because I think it was extremely uncomfortable, she told Dagbladet at the time.
Throughout her upbringing, her mother has been good at reminding her that it is important to keep control of her own health. That one should not wait too long with mammography, cell samples or other important tests.
She expected to be summoned to class for a cell sample when she turned 25, but the summons never arrived in the mail. Therefore, she took matters into her own hands and went to Volvat.
–
– After a lot of support from home and on social media, I calmed down. I thought about the positive aspects of having booked an appointment, been examined and was in the process of taking care of my own body and health, Andresen told about the cell changes, and added:
– I was quickly called back for a biopsy, ie a tissue sample, which was not very comfortable. This was because they wanted to be completely sure before they recommended me a conization.
A conization is a small surgical procedure on the uterine tube, where the area with cell changes is operated on. This is done to remove the cells that could potentially develop into cervical cancer, according to Lommelegen.
