A man in his 20s was shot dead late on Monday evening in Kristianstad.

The murder occurred in the middle of a residential area with many families with children.

– I heard five or six shots. It felt like it was very close, says Nanna, who lives in the area.

A brown police dog runs with its nose on the ground. It searches the lawn between the houses in the residential area at Vemmenhögsgatan in the Gamlegården district.

At 10 o’clock on Tuesday morning, the police complete their work. The dog jumps into the trunk of one of the cars and the two patrolmen drive off.

Afterwards, no trace of the fatal shooting that occurred late on Monday evening is visible. Then a young man lost his life after an unknown assailant opened fire in the residential area.

– I heard five or six shots. It felt like it was very close, says Nanna, who is out walking her dog on Tuesday.

First fatal shooting in a long time

Gamlegården in Kristianstad is classified as a vulnerable area and has had problems with some crime. Recently, however, it has been calmer. Nanna has lived in the area for 12 years and has noticed the change.

– The last three years have been quiet. But now this happened. It’s not good. But I still feel safe living here, says Nanna.

Several people who live in the area heard the shots and alerted the police.

Mohamed Yosuf, who lives in the area, first thought it was a sound from his mobile phone when he heard the loud bangs.

– I cooked and had tiktok on. Then I heard four or five bangs. My first thought was that there was something in the phone that was ringing. But when I saw the blue lights a little later, I understood, says Mohamed Yosuf.

“Is someone’s son”

Just like his neighbor Nanna, he has experienced that the area has been quiet lately. Therefore, the shooting death came as a shock to him.

– It’s terrible. This is an area with many families with children. I have lived here for four years and nothing has ever happened right here, says Mohamed Yosuf.

A woman who lives with her husband and child about 70 meters from the crime scene tells Aftonbladet that she thinks it is terrible.

– At first you think it’s gang-related. But even if it’s a gang shooting, you have to think that this man is someone’s son, maybe someone’s father. It’s terrible, she says.

Police spokesperson Robert Loeffel in Blekinge and north-eastern Skåne states that the murdered man was in his 20s. According to information to Aftonbladet, the man must have been hit by two shots.

– He is known to the police but not for any serious crime, says Robert Loeffel.

Investigating connection to other shooting

He says that residents called the police shortly after the shots were fired. Several of them had also seen a man lying on the ground.

When police arrived at the scene, a hunt for the suspected murderer began. The area was cordoned off, the police searched for the perpetrator with dogs and sent up drones. But to no avail.

– No one has been detained yet, says Robert Loeffel.

A little over an hour after the fatal shooting, a man in his 30s was shot in the Gullvik district of Malmö. The man survived but was seriously injured. The police do not rule out that there may be a connection between the two shootings.

– We obviously have to investigate whether there can be any connection between the two cases. It is relatively close in time and geographically, says Nils Norling, police spokesperson in Malmö.
