Kristianas Kalva Quartet Takes Center Stage at Liepāja Jazz Music Event – Jam Session

On Tuesday, October 10, in the public area of ​​the 2nd floor of the “Lielais dzintars” concert hall, the traditional Liepāja jazz music event – Jam Session will take place at 7 p.m. This time, the special guests of the concert will be the Kristianas Kalva Quartet, the Liepāja Music, Art and Design Secondary School informed the portal.

Kristians Kalva is one of Latvia’s brightest jazz trumpeters of the new generation. This year, he completed his studies at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague under famous European trumpeters Rik Mol, Martij de Laat and Frank van der Peol, and won recognition in various international competitions. This year he passed the competition and was chosen as part of the “Jong Metropole” orchestra for further projects. He regularly cooperates with the most important Latvian orchestras – the Latvian Radio Big Band, the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, the chamber orchestra “Sinfonietta Rīga”, the Latvian National Opera and Ballet Orchestra, as well as performed in foreign projects – in Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Finland, Germany, the USA, Spain, etc. and has also played with famous musicians – Randy Brecker, Shayna Steele, Jochen Neuffer, Raimonda Paula, Laima Vaikula, Ksenia Sidorova, Normund Rutuli, and the artists of the group “Instrumenti” and others.

Nikolas Tsangaris is a drummer from Paphos (Cyprus). His passion for music began at the age of four, when Nicholas began studying under the guidance of Petros Kizas. Nicholas graduated with honors from Pafa Music High School. He was admitted to the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where he studied in the jazz department under Eric Ineke, Stefan Kruger and Felix Schlarmann. In November 2021, he had the opportunity to showcase his skills as a drummer in the Royal Conservatory Big Band, led by the renowned Miho Hazama. The following year, Nicolas landed the coveted role of drummer in the Jong Metropole Orchestra, where he collaborated with great conductors such as Tom Cohen and Jochen Neuffer. His outstanding performance in the Fast Future project with Donny McCaslin at the LantarenVenster Rotterdam Film and Jazz Theater won the prestigious Keep an Eye Outstanding Talent Award. Nicolas currently lives in the Netherlands, working and playing in international bands as a leader and co-leader.

The concept of the Jam Session music evening is designed as a jazz music, improvisational event in a free, relaxed atmosphere. In the first part of the event, the invited guest artist will perform together with the accompanying band. In the second part of the event, students of the Popular and Jazz Music Department of LMMDV will join in performing free improvisations. Attendees of musical evenings during the Jam Session have the opportunity to get to know jazz music better, get educated in this field and get to know well-known artists in Latvia and Europe.
