During Tuesday, Norlén had talks with all party leaders to get an overview of who he thinks is most likely to get a majority in the Riksdag behind him.

– Ulf Kristersson receives the exploration assignment. He must report back no later than Friday, said Speaker Andreas Norlén, who is the leader of the Riksdag.

As early as next week, there may thus be a vote in the Riksdag on a new prime ministerial candidate.

– My ambition is for the Riksdag to be able to vote for a new prime minister next week, Norlén said.

Ready before August?

The probation deadline is this time of only three days. The last time there was a government crisis in Sweden in 2018, the exploration deadline was 14 days. But the process was criticized at the time for taking too long. At that time, it took 134 days before a new government was in place.

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven announced on Monday that the government is resigning. The decision was made after his Social Democratic government was overthrown as a result of a no-confidence vote in the Riksdag last week.

Norlén has four attempts to propose a new prime minister. The ambition is for a new Swedish government to be ready by the end of July. If no extra election is announced, Norlèn states.

Norlén does not rule out that Kristersson will be proposed as Prime Minister in the Riksdag, even though he does not meet the probation deadline.

– I have not decided yet. But it is clear that it is an opportunity to go to the Riksdag just to keep up the pace, he says.

Kristersson: – Must collect

Kristersson himself writes on Instagram that he in the meeting with Norlén said that if there is an opportunity to form a bourgeois government, he and the Moderates are ready to take responsibility for Sweden again getting a functioning leadership.

– In the coming days, I will focus on the important talks that will now be made with the other parties in Sweden who also want a change of power, parties that put the political issues before the political game, he writes.

He points out that they are in a special situation after a pandemic and with only one year until the next election.

– A new government must become a real “restart government”, and it must be able to unite, not continue to split. A few important issues must be prioritized in the coming year, he writes.

A voice?

Kristersson will have a difficult job forming a new government, but that is not out of the question.

In order to form a government, Kristersson is dependent on not getting more than 175 of the 349 representatives in the Riksdag against him.

It would be natural for the Moderates to form the government together with the Christian Democrats (KD) with the support of the Liberals and the controversial Sweden Democrats. Then they will still be dependent on a representative from one of the other parties not voting against.

Center Party politician Helena Lindahl can be the tongue in cheek, according to TT. She has expressed dissatisfaction with Löfven, but has not yet said how she will vote.

KD leader Ebba Busch says Aftonbladet that she has received indications that they can get support from representatives who will vote against the party line.

Löfven can form a new government

If Kristersson fails to form a government, it could open the door for Löfven to try to form a government again.

When he came out on Tuesday morning after a half-hour conversation with Speaker Norlén, he was clear that he demanded that the budget agreement be passed in the Riksdag.

– If the government I then lead does not get through its budget, then I resign. That is my message to the President, said Löfven.

He said, however, that he was open to forming a government without making sure he would get support for the budget.

– It is an alternative that gives more time for more parties to think about what can be done in this situation, he said.
