Kristen Stewart felt the pressure to talk about her sexuality after she first appeared in public with a woman by her side. In an interview with director Clea DuVall, in whose film Happiest Season she will be showing soon, for InStyle Magazine tells the actress that she felt rushed.
“When I first started dating a girl, I was immediately asked if I am a lesbian. I was only 21 years old,” said Stewart, now 30.
The actress tried to keep her private life to herself as much as possible. “Not because I was ashamed to be with a woman, but I didn’t want to give myself to the public.”
Stewart thinks afterwards that her restraint in public has hurt some former lovers. “I was suspicious for a while. Also in my previous relationships with men, I did everything I could to avoid being photographed doing things together, things that would then no longer be ours.”
‘Now dare to say it was difficult and strange’
“I was rushed to label myself. I had no qualms about showing who I am because I knew I was going to be photographed with my girlfriend, but I didn’t want to talk about it. I felt pressure to do so. but it didn’t come from the community. “
The actress only later realized that this pressure was taking its toll. “At the time I thought everything was just fine, because my parents accepted me as I am, but now I dare say it was difficult and strange.”
‘I just enjoy it’
These days, Stewart has less trouble showing her love in public. “I actually enjoy it. If I can easily do something that might help someone who is in trouble with themselves, then that’s fantastic,” she says of representing the LGBTI community. “When I see a child being themselves in a way that might not have been possible when I was growing up, it makes me happy.”
Stewart, who previously had relationships with Twilightco-star Robert Pattinson and model Stella Maxwell has now teamed up with screenwriter Dylan Meyer.
