Kristen bergensskole removed rainbow flag

The flag – which also had the text “To love is a human right” – hung over a common area at the school in Bergen center before it was taken down, writes Bergensavisen. Rector Birger Danielsen confirms that the flag was decided to be removed.

– The Pride movement has contributed to important work against discrimination, and incitement aimed at vulnerable people in society. Working for equality is good. At the same time, the movement is closely linked to the organization FRI, which also has a clear position on cohabitation issues and for what one wants to promote values around the framework for sexuality, which there must be room to disagree with. We as a Christian independent school do not support everything that, it was said in the principal’s announcement. He believes the flag could be perceived as a support for “the whole agenda behind Pride”.

Bisexual Christian Onstad-Kalvik is one of several students who respond.

– It is hurtful, and I think it can be harmful for those who are in the closet, who do not know what to do and who to talk to. It is offensive to the gay community, says the 18-year-old.

Festival director Joakim Aadland for the Rainbow Days in Bergen is disappointed when he first hears what has happened.

– It is a pity that a school that should lead by example is someone refusing to hang a flag and show pride in the diversity we have.
