‘Kristaps the Great’ applicants have been named. Most nominations for Simon’s film ‘Year before the war’

On Wednesday, October 6, announced this year’s National Film Awards “Kristaps the GreatThe nominees and the program. The new multi-series feature film “Emilija. Queen of the Latvian Press”, which has received 10 nominations for the National Film Award, has also received a high rating. Laila Pakalniņa’s latest film “Mirror” and Marta Elīna Martinson’s teenage comedy “Tizlenes” have also received 10 nominations.

The films of Simon Martinson and Pakalniņa claim to “The Great Kristaps” in the category “The Best Feature Film”. Dace Pūce’s debut feature film “Bedre”, which has received a total of eight nominations, will also compete with them in this category.

Andrejs Verkhustinsky’s film “Delle”, Vitalija Manska’s “Gorbachev’s Paradise”, as well as Ivars Zviedra’s “On the Unseen, Brasa!” Will be nominated for the award in the category “Best Feature Documentary”. Swedish and Verhoustinsky films are premiered in the “Big Kristaps” program.

This year “Kristaps the Great” will also be presented in the category “Best Multi-Series Film”. It nominated three works – “Alvis Hermans” “Agency”, Anda Mizish, Kristine Zelves, Gints Grube and Davis Simman “Emily. Queen of the Latvian Press”, as well as Maris Lagzdins and Una Rozenbaums “Stay Negative”.

Costume designer Ieva Kundziņa, whose career began with the film “Nightingale” (1966), will be honored for her lifetime contribution at the “Great Kristaps” ceremony, which will take place on November 14.

The Minister of Culture Nauris Puntulis (NA) participated in the press conference and thanked the film industry, which continues to create in such difficult conditions. Puntulis admitted that there has been and will be support for the film industry from the Ministry of Culture.

Dita Rietuma, the head of the National Cinema Center, pointed out the difficulties caused by the pandemic in the distribution of cinema, and emphasized that films can best be appreciated in cinemas – where they are intended to be shown. Over the past year, Latvian cinema has been complemented by a wide variety of films, and hopefully this will continue in the future. Dita Rietuma also admitted that the National Film Center has continued to support the production of high-quality multi-series films.

Ieva Romanova, the chairwoman of the Cinematographers’ Union, expressed her joy that Latvian cinema has survived and overcome many difficulties, and there are many films submitted to “Big Kristaps”.

Arta Ģiga, a representative of the “Big Kristaps” selection commission, revealed that the film selection commission had watched 92 films, and expressed admiration to cinematographers that such a diverse cinema was created in such difficult conditions, praising both the work of already known directors and young manuscripts.

The most important event of the Latvian film industry “Lielais Kristaps” will take place this year from November 11 to 15. This is the most important event in the Latvian film industry, which gives an opportunity to see and professionally evaluate the latest Latvian films, as well as to honor the Latvian cinema traditions. In 2016, “Kristaps the Great” won the status of the National Award, films will be available at the Splendid Palace cinema and online – www.filmas.lv.

The main event of “Great Kristaps” – the award ceremony will take place on Sunday, November 14. Viewers will be able to watch the solemn ceremony, in which the prizes for the best films and film industry professionals, as well as special prizes will be presented, will be broadcast live on Latvian television.

As always, a separate screening is scheduled for the youngest spectators – on the morning of Saturday and Sunday, November 13 and 14.
