Georgieva, who is serving a second term in the European Commission, can change her place with President Rosen Plevneliev, who has no great chance of repeating his mandate to “Dondukov” 2. As a compensation that he will not be re-elected as head of state by the largest party , Plevneliev would be compensated to finish Georgieva’s term in the EC.
The arguments in favor of Georgieva are that she has a high rating and with her promotion, GERB will not risk losing the first elections, which is a real danger with Plevneliev, whose approval rating has hit rock bottom in recent months.
GERB leader Boyko Borisov has already excluded himself and his right-hand man Tsvetan Tsvetanov from the presidential battle. Last week, in a televised appearance, the prime minister announced that there is no one to choose Tsvetanov and he will remain to do the operational work in the party.
Borisov has repeatedly mentioned that it is time for the head of state to become a woman. According to this criterion, Yordanka Fandakova is the favorite. The mayor of Sofia, however, prefers not to change her post and to continue doing her work in the Sofia municipality. Regional Minister Liliana Pavlova, who is also among Borisov’s favorites, is not 40 years old, which is the constitutional requirement for the highest post in the state.
The publication of her birth certificate last week supports the rumors that Georgieva is being considered for the presidency. It is clear from the document that her name was not Stalinka. Similar rumors have been circulating for years, and even the MP from BSP Left Bulgaria Tasko Ermenkov fueled them with a statement on television that the European Commissioner actually bore the name of Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin. In the years in which Georgieva was born, there was such a fashion – to baptize the children of Lenin or Stalin. The publication of the birth certificate now, rather than two years ago, when the rumor started, is further evidence that Kristalina is probably preparing for a major leap in domestic politics.
The official position of GERB is that the presidential candidate will be announced in the summer, at the end of June or even July. It is not yet clear what the mechanism will be – whether there will be party nominations or whether the leadership will indicate it.
