/ world today news/ In the last days before the next vote for UN Secretary General in New York, the rumor is spreading widely that the Bulgarian Prime Minister, under pressure from friends of Kristalina Georgieva in the European People’s Party, will replace Irina Bokova as the official candidate. Rumor has it that with the support of Germany, Croatia, Hungary and Latvia, Kristalina Georgieva will be elevated to UN Secretary General in the days around September 15th (Viktor Orbán is expected to visit Bulgaria on September 13th and 14th). This rumor appeared on various Twitter accounts.
On the last day before the vote in New York, a rumor spread that Boyko Borisov was under new pressure from the friends of our European Commissioner in the EPP to replace Irina with Kristalina. As senseless and ridiculous as such an idea is, according to sources from Brussels, there really are such measures there.
They will not help Georgieva or Borisov in any way, but they are doing the dirty work of destabilizing the support for the Bulgarian candidacy. Despite the rumor campaign, Irina Bokova managed to maintain the result of the previous vote, but now ranks fifth, behind Serbia and Macedonia. A more detailed analysis shows that Irina remains one of the five candidates who can win the competition (they have no more than 6 votes against) and is the only woman among them.
But if Borisov and the government do not resolutely reject the rumors, continue to gossip and do not clearly and articulately support Bokova, this chance may be lost in a shameful way for Bulgaria.
The ClubZ website published information with the following title: Latvia, Hungary, Croatia are preparing to nominate Kristalina Georgieva for UN Secretary General
These rumors negatively affect the Security Council’s vote on the UN because they show inconsistency and a lack of statesmanship. A separate question is how ridiculous it sounds to say that Kristalina Georgieva could be the candidate of the EPP for UN Secretary General. It is not parties, but countries that nominate for Secretary General.
