Krispy Kreme, one of the world’s best-known doughnut companies, announced on Thursday that it will begin operating in Spain next year. The American-based firm will offer its specialties to Spanish consumers thanks to an alliance with the Spanish firm Glaseadas Originales, as announced in a press release published this afternoon. The announcement highlights that the joint venture, in which the North American company will maintain a minority stake, hopes to create “more than 500 access points” in large cities, including Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Malaga.
“After a tremendous response in Europe following our successful entry into France and the announcement of opening in Germany, we couldn’t be more excited to bring the Krispy Kreme experience to Spain,” said Raphael Duvivier, Chief Development Officer for Krispy Kreme. “We believe our fresh doughnuts will be a wonderful addition to the thriving Spanish food market.”
Its launch in France caused a stir among local fans, as the company promised to distribute more than 100,000 free doughnuts on the main streets of Paris. In addition, the coffee chain appealed to the humor of French consumers with signs reading “The best croissant in Paris” or “Give up macaroons,” in reference to the typical local sweets.
This expansion into the Spanish market is part of the company’s strategic plan to bring its famous doughnuts to more consumers around the world. Since 2022, the North Carolina-based company has begun operating in six new countries, including, in addition to France, Switzerland, Turkey and Chile.
Today, the coffee chain operates in more than 35 countries through its network of stores, as well as through partnerships with large retailers. In total, the company operates more than 14,000 points of sale for its fresh doughnuts.
