It was previously announced that it was among the films “Krigsseileren”, “Sick girl” and “Alle hater Johan” to represent Norway.
Now it is clear that it is the “Sailor of War” who has been selected among the three.
– Conveying the story is the most important thing
In the drama “Krigsseileren” we learn about the story of over 30,000 Norwegian war sailors and the fate of their families during and after the Second World War.
Director and screenwriter Gunnar Vikenes said in one press release earlier this fall that “Krigsseileren” is a necessary story to be told to put into perspective the injustice suffered by wartime sailors after the war.
– When the film was given the honor of being chosen as the Norwegian Oscar nominee, we hope it will help even more people go to see the story of the war sailors and their families. Conveying that story has always been the most important thing for us, writes Vikene in a press release from the Norwegian Film Institute.
It is estimated that around 3,700 Norwegian war sailors lost their lives and 473 ships were lost during the war.
The most expensive film in Norwegian history
In the cast list of the film we find, among others, Kristoffer Joner (Bølgen), Pål Sverre Hagen (Exit) and Ine Marie Wilmann (Exit, Sonja).
– It’s great that the film represents Norway at the Academy of the Oscars. The film is about a part of the story that we share in many ways with Americans. The fact that the film, as a Norwegian Oscar nominee, can help shed light on what happened to more than 240,000 American sailors is of course very important to us too, says Pål Sverre Hagen in a press release from the Norwegian Film Institute.

Krigsseileren “has a budget of NOK 110 million, making it the most expensive Norwegian film production of all time.
The film premiered on September 23 and subsequently received numerous positive reviews from reviewers. “Krigsseileren” is described as one of the most important war films ever made.
Norwegian favorite
Last year it was the Norwegian blockbuster “The worst person in the world” nominated for a total of two categoriesboth “best foreign language film” and “best original screenplay”.
However, there was no award for the popular feature film, but the film nevertheless received great international recognition.
Among other things, former President Barack Obama talked about the film and said it was one of his favorite films of 2021.
