Nunavik Strengthens Internet Access with SpaceX Collaboration, Eyes Fiber Optic Future
Northern Canada’s Nunavik region is getting a major internet upgrade, bridging the digital divide with a mix of innovative solutions. While a long-awaited fiber optic network nears completion, the Kativik Regional Government (KRG) is leveraging SpaceX’s Starlink technology to deliver immediate high-speed capabilities to underserved communities.
This unique partnership sees KRG installing seven “gateway terminals,” marking a significant expansion of internet access across the region. “Engineers are currently talking to Canadian North Cargo to load a 737 freighter jet with gateway terminals,” said Daryl Combden, KRG administration director, outlining the ambitious logistics involved.
These specialized terminals, measuring two meters by two meters, will be deployed in January.
Immediate Impacts, Long-Term Vision
Kuujjuaq will receive gateway terminals, while six other communities – Kangiqsujuaq, Quaqtaq, Kangirsuk, Aupaluk, Tasiujaq, and Kangiqsualujjuag – will benefit from larger "high-speed" Starlink terminals. These massive dishes boast bandwidth capabilities up to 5 gigabits, an 18-fold increase over the standard 300 megabits, delivering lightning-fast internet to residents.
This Starlink connection is designed as a temporary measure while KRG diligently pursues its fiber optic project.
“This will be seamless to users, we will take the bandwidth and run it through our existing network,” Combden assured.
For Kuujjuaq and others, these terminals will seamlessly integrate with the Fiber to the Home network, ensuring a streamlined transition to the final, permanent solution.
Balancing Innovation and Local Goals
Despite embracing Starlink as a temporary solution, some council members voiced concerns about partnering with a company rumored to prioritize global ambitions over regional needs.
Responding to these concerns, Combden acknowledged the strengths of Starlink while highlighting the importance of the regional fiber optic network as the ultimate goal.
“Starlink has been a game changer, not just for Nunavik but for the world,” he conceded. However, he cautioned, "as Elon Musk launches new satellites, is he going to be as concerned with Nunavik as he is about Africa?".
His comments underscored the KRG’s commitment to a locally driven, long-term solution that guarantees reliable and sustainable internet access for all Nunavik residents.
Fiber Optic Future Within Reach
The KRG’s dedicated work on the fiber optic network began in March 2020, with a price tag of $158 million.
This ambitious project, funded through a collaboration between the federal government, Quebec government, and KRG, is nearing completion.
Currently, only three connections remain:
- A link between Deception Bay and Kangiqsujuaq
- An underwater connection for all Ungava communities
- A land connection between Kuujjuaq and Kawawachikamach
With all three sections scheduled for completion by the end of 2026, the future of internet connectivity in Nunavik shines bright.
