The Kremlin warns that the Ukrainian branch of the British arms company BAE Systems could become a target for the Russian army. Yesterday it was announced that the company, the largest defense company in Europe by turnover, has signed a contract to open a subsidiary in Ukraine and possibly produce weapons there.
Moscow said today that any entity that aids in the manufacture of weapons used against Russia could become a target of the military. The Kremlin has often threatened that it also considers transport trains with Western arms support to Ukraine as legitimate targets.
There are no reports that Russia has actually managed to destroy Western arms shipments. It does seem to have had plans: last July, Poland arrested several Russian spies who allegedly planned to blow up a train with weapons for Ukraine.
BAE announced yesterday that it has reached agreements with Zelensky about the supply of more weapons, equipment and training for the Ukrainian army. The deal would also open the door to production of L119 howitzers in Ukraine, according to the British company.
According to the British broadcaster BBC, the company has not yet opened an office or factory in Ukraine. Discussions on this with the Ukrainian government are still ongoing. The British arms company BAE has produced many of the weapons Western countries have supplied to Ukraine, including howitzers and armored vehicles. The company also facilitates weapons training for the Ukrainian armed forces.
