Kremlin sparks confusion with video

A video released by the Russian Defense Ministry shows a massive military convoy allegedly heading towards Kyiv. What is it about the video that many dismiss as propaganda?

Military trucks are parked to the left and right of the road as far as the eye can see, in between a column of heavy tanks rolls through snowfall across a snow-covered road: These are images intended to show that the Russian army is on the advance in Ukraine – but it is the video real?

The clip was originally published by “Zvezdanews”, the propaganda department of the Russian Defense Ministry, on Telegram. The text accompanying the video reads: “Footage of the advance of a tank unit in the Kyiv region during a special military operation”. The given release date is this Monday, March 7th at 7:42 am. It is not clear when it was recorded.

Military expert claims to have recognized unit in video

The Reuters news agency initially shared the 58-second clip on Twitter, but deleted the tweet after user information. “Bild” reporter Paul Ronzheimer, who is reporting from Kyiv these days, doubted the authenticity of the video. On Twitter he wrote: “There is no snow in Kyiv at the moment”, which other users also noted. The question is at least how up-to-date the video is.

In fact, it hasn’t snowed in and around Kyiv in the past few days, despite the freezing temperatures. However, images from the region earlier in the month show amounts of snow that match those in the video. And according to meteorologist Jörg Kachelmann, there have been snow showers southeast of Kyiv.

Ukraine: Russian invading army making little progress

The assessment of military expert Rob Lee also speaks for the authenticity of the video: “The video shows BMP-2 and T-80BVM, who probably belong to the 64th Motorized Rifle Brigade of the Eastern Military District,” Lee writes on Twitter. The “V” that can be seen on many vehicles in the video also speaks for the authenticity of the recordings. With “V” or “Z” they have Russian troops marked the vehicles of the invading army. You can find out more about the meaning of the symbols here.

So far, the Russian advance is anything but according to plan. Even eleven days after the start of the invasion, no Ukrainian city is still under Russian control. Russia has also not been able to achieve air sovereignty so far. According to Western secret services, the Kremlin did not anticipate the massive resistance from the Ukrainian army and population. Logistical problems and low soldier morale also appear to be holding back the Russian advance.
