Financial Associated Press, October 26 (Editor Xia Junxiong)On Wednesday (October 25) local time, the Kremlin issued a statement stating that Russia had successfully tested its ability to launch large-scale retaliatory nuclear strikes through land, sea and air.
“Actual launches of ballistic and cruise missiles were carried out during the training,” the Kremlin said.
Russia launched a Yars intercontinental ballistic missile from a test site in its Far East and a nuclear submarine launched a submarine-launched ballistic missile from the Barents Sea, according to a Kremlin statement. -95MS bomber test-fired a cruise missile.
Russia is one of the very few countries in the world that possesses a complete triad of nuclear weapons strike capabilities. The nuclear triad refers to the ability of a country to simultaneously possess three nuclear weapons strike methods: intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine-launched ballistic missiles and strategic bombers.
Russia is training its troops to carry out large-scale nuclear strikes in the event of an enemy nuclear attack, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Wednesday.
After the conflict between Russia and Ukraine broke out in February last year, relations between Russia and the West deteriorated sharply, which in turn led to greater differences between Russia and the United States on nuclear arms control issues.
In February this year, Russia announced that it would temporarily suspend implementation of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty and stop sharing detailed information about its nuclear weapons with the United States. The United States subsequently announced in March that it would stop exchanging nuclear weapons data with Russia. As the two countries with the largest number of nuclear weapons in the world, Russia and the United States account for about 90% of the world’s nuclear warheads.
In October this year, Russia announced that it would withdraw its ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, with the aim of restoring equal status with the United States. Russian officials stressed that withdrawing ratification of the treaty does not mean it intends to resume nuclear testing.
