The Kremlin has decided to postpone a new wave of mobilization until winter, fearing internal instability, The Times confirms.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has not yet decided to announce a new wave of mobilization, fearing growing discontent among the population ahead of the presidential election. This is what British political scientist Mark Galeotti says in an article in The Times.
According to Galeotti, the Russian military insisted on announcing a new wave of mobilization because it had almost no reserves to contain a Ukrainian counteroffensive. But the Kremlin does not dare to take such an unpopular step.
“The military wanted it to be done immediately, but the political managers of the Kremlin decided to wait until winter, because the elections will not be until September. This will reduce the mobilized preparation time, but at the moment Putin is more concerned about the risks to his own skin,” writes the British political scientist. He also noted that the military industry of the Russian Federation increased production during the year and a half of the war, but reserves are being depleted at a tremendous rate.
We remind you that the first wave of mobilization took place in Russia in September 2022. Then Moscow had to take such a step, because the Ukrainian armed forces broke through the Russian defenses and liberated the Kharkiv region. Half of the so-called “mobiles” were immediately taken to the front almost without preparation to limit the further movement of the Ukrainians. The remaining half were sent for training and were used to compensate for losses during the fighting. Now these reserves are apparently running out.
It was rumored that a new wave of mobilization was supposed to take place in the spring of 2023, but the Kremlin did not take this step. Rumors have now intensified that it will be announced in the fall. Over the past six months, the State Duma of the Russian Federation has adopted several laws that make it easier for the Kremlin to recruit new “cannon fodder”.
