The Kremlin has said that Russian businessmen who express anti-Russian views while trying to get Western sanctions lifted against them are traitors who are selling out their own country, Reuters reported, BTA reported.
The EU recently removed three Russian businessmen from its sanctions list, which was created to punish Moscow for the war in Ukraine. However, the sanctions against many other Russians were extended. Asked for comment on the information, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said today that Europe itself was unlikely to be able to explain the logic of the decision-making process behind the sanctions.

Different Russian businessmen have adopted different methods in trying to be removed from the sanctions list, the spokesman said. “There are businessmen who adopt anti-Russian positions and try to remove the sanctions against themselves for 12 silver coins – they are traitors,” said Peskov. “There are entrepreneurs who systematically and methodically defend their interests in court – this is the right of every entrepreneur and we treat them with respect,” he added.
Russia considers any seizure of private property or encroachment on individual business assets “contrary … to international laws,” Peskov also said.
Earlier this week, President Vladimir Putin described the co-founder of Yandex technology company Arkady Volozh as a “talented person” who has the right to express his opinion after the businessman spoke out strongly against the war last month. Volozh condemned Russia’s “barbaric invasion”, but this week the EU extended sanctions against him. “It has to do with the desire of these people to keep their businesses, to keep their assets, especially if they are people who have moved and decided to spend their lives in another country,” Putin said on Tuesday.
