Kremlin reacted strongly to his joining Finland with an alliance North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as the 31st member. The Kremlin called Finland’s joining NATO tantamount to an ‘attack’ on security Russia.
As reported AFP and ReutersOn Tuesday (4/4/2023), the Kremlin said in a statement that Moscow would be forced to take “countermeasures” to ensure Russia’s security in response to Finland joining NATO.
No further mention of the intended countermeasures.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called Helsinki’s move to join the NATO military alliance the “latest upset” for Russia’s security. He also called the NATO structure hostile to Moscow.
“NATO expansion is an attack on our security and Russia’s national interests,” Peskov told reporters.
Previously it was reported that Finland officially became the 31st member of NATO at a meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) of NATO member countries on Tuesday (4/4) local time in Brussels, Belgium. The meeting will be held for two days.
“This is a historic week. Tomorrow (4/4), we will welcome Finland as the 31st member of NATO,” said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in a press conference on Monday (3/4) local time, as reported by TASS News Agency
“We will fly the Finnish flag for the first time here at NATO headquarters,” he said.
Finnish President Sauli Niinisto’s office has confirmed the information. It was also stated that Niinisto would travel to Brussels to attend Finland’s official joining ceremony with NATO, which will be held at the alliance’s military headquarters.
