Kremlin Captures Avdiivka: Major Advance for Moscow in Ukraine
In a significant development in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Kremlin has captured the embattled city of Avdiivka. This marks a major advance for Moscow, as it is their first significant territorial gain in the war since May 2023. The Ukrainian military spokesperson, Dmytro Lykhoviy, revealed that Russian forces launched multiple attacks to the west of Avdiivka, resulting in Ukraine’s withdrawal due to shortages in manpower and ammunition. Despite this setback, Ukrainian forces are strongly positioned in nearby villages such as Lastochkyne, Robotyne, and Verbove, making it difficult for Russia to break through.
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has been closely monitoring the situation following Avdiivka’s fall into Russian hands. They predict that Ukrainian forces will establish new defensive lines not far beyond Avdiivka, which could potentially halt the Russian offensive in the area. However, there are conflicting reports regarding the state of Ukrainian defensive capabilities. While some Russian sources claim that Ukrainian forces are withdrawing in a panicked and disorganized manner, ISW has not observed any footage supporting these claims. It remains to be seen how the situation will unfold in the coming days.
In addition to the capture of Avdiivka, Ukraine has also made headlines for shooting down several Russian fighter aircraft. The Armed Forces of Ukraine claim to have shot down six Russian fighter aircraft in less than 72 hours. One particular incident involved a Russian Su-34 fighter-bomber crashing in the Luhansk region. There are reports suggesting that the pilot deliberately crashed into a civilian neighborhood after realizing his aircraft was severely damaged. These incidents highlight the ongoing tensions and military engagements between Russia and Ukraine.
Amidst these developments, Ukraine commemorates the “Heavenly Hundred” who were killed during the Maidan Nezalezhnosti protests 10 years ago. A memorial service was held in St. Michael’s Cathedral, followed by a procession to the Alley of the Heavenly Hundred. This serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for Ukraine’s independence and serves as a symbol of resilience in the face of adversity.
President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the Munich Security Conference, urging delegates to question how Putin is still able to continue the war in Ukraine. He emphasized that instead of asking Ukraine when the war will end, the focus should be on understanding why Putin is allowed to persist in his actions. Zelensky remains optimistic, stating that Ukraine can reclaim its land while Putin stands to lose.
The capture of Avdiivka and the ongoing military engagements between Russia and Ukraine underscore the volatile nature of the conflict. As both sides continue to vie for control, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that will bring peace to the region.
